The Sandhills are aptly named. If you've never seen them up close, imagine a lot of sand, with sparsely growing grass holding the sand down. Then imagine sticking your elbow in the sand and finding water. Kind of like Cape Cod, except it's fresh, pure water, the drinkable kind. And it's in the middle of the Great Plains, not near an ocean or even a lake.
Then imagine all that sand being disturbed, as in this video. Imagine that sand swirling. Imagine the Dustbowl. Imagine how long it will take that 100-mile long Dust Alley to become pasture again.
